Doors Open Days 2025: Unlock Scotland this September
The Outer Hebrides to take part in Scotland’s largest free festival celebrating the buildings, people and heritage that shape our communities.
This September, Doors Open Days returns for its 35th year, inviting people across Scotland to step inside hundreds of buildings and spaces that are usually closed to the public. As the country’s largest free festival dedicated to architecture, history and culture, Doors Open Days is a nationwide invitation to explore Scotland’s built and cultural heritage, and to see it through fresh eyes.
The Outer Hebrides is proud to take part in this national celebration, offering a local programme full of engaging events, inspiring venues and family-friendly activities. From historic sites to creative spaces, public buildings to hidden gems, the festival showcases the character and stories of the places that define our communities.
Throughout the month, venues across Scotland will welcome visitors for guided tours, exhibitions, performances, hands-on workshops and more, all for free. Whether you’re rediscovering familiar places or venturing somewhere completely new, Doors Open Days offers an opportunity to connect with your surroundings in a meaningful way.
The Outer Hebrides Doors Open Days will take place on 05-07 September and features an exciting line-up of venues and events, including a medieval church, the local arts centre, community museums & exhibitions, archaeology walks, and distillery tours.
Each building or site opens not only its doors but also a window into the past, present and future of the community. These are the places where stories were lived, art was created, and history unfolded, and this September, the public is invited to step inside.
Director of The Scottish Civic Trust, Doors Open Days national coordinator, Joe Traynor, said:
“National Doors Open Days encourages everyone to explore what’s often right in front of them. The festival is a chance to see familiar places with fresh eyes, to learn, and to make memories with friends and family. We’re delighted that (Insert region) is taking part in this year’s programme and helping to celebrate the places that shape Scotland.”
Since its launch in 1990, Doors Open Days has become a beloved tradition that now reaches all 32 local authority areas. It brings together thousands of volunteers, organisations and visitors every year with one common goal: to make Scotland’s heritage accessible, engaging and open to all.
Whether you’re a history lover, a curious local or simply looking for a fun, free day out, The Outer Hebrides Doors Open Days promises something for everyone.
